Disc Golf Course Elements

The Target
This is an outdoors game similar to golf, so you want to make sure you have enough room to throw the disc around the course and get it into the “disc pole hole” and score. The disc pole hole is the target of the game.

Tee Pad-
The game starts at tee pad #1. A tee pad is a solid base where the player initiates the hole. It is usually made out of concrete, rubber, dirt pads, or other cheaper material such as recyclables. This is where the player stands and plans out every move to get the disc into the hole.

Layout Signs-
Layout signs are essential to a disc golf course. They are found at the beginning of each disc pole hole. They give important information to the player regarding length, out-of-bounds and layout of the hole, so that the player can plan their disc moves accordingly. They also provide information regarding safety issues that need to be considered while playing at the hole.

Obstacles-
Each course is unique with its own obstacles which include topography. These are natural elements such as trees, shrubs, rocks, lakes, and other natural objects that can be either an advantage or disadvantage to the disc golfer. For example, a tree can be an advantage by using it to get the disc closer to the disc pole hole, only if the move is planned successfully, but the tree can also be a disadvantage if it is in the way of getting the disc into the pole hole.

Now that you are familiar with the basic elements of a disc golf course: disc pole holes, tee pads, layout signs, and topography…

What Is Disc Golf?

Disc golf is similar to golf

Disc golf is similar to golf, except players use frisbees instead of balls and clubs, and throw them to a basket as target instead of a hole in the ground. There are different types of discs used for different purposes, much like ball golfers use different clubs.

The Goal- "Ching!"
The goal of the game is to throw a frisbee disc into the target, which is a basket called "Pole Hole".  The second goal is to keep the number of throws at minimum. At the start of the game, players begin at a designated "tee" area and make their way toward the goal, throwing each time from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The game ends for a player when he or she throws a successful 'putt' and sends the disc into the basket. The most satisfying sound a disc golfer can hear is the 'ching!' of a disc crashing the chains before dropping into the basket.
